Klaus Dittrich, chairman of the executive board of Messe München, organizer of the Ispo trade shows around the world, and Rolf Schmid, chief executive of the Mammut Sports Group, made a bid for the summit of the Mont Blanc earlier this month, but didn't quite make it to the top. Schmid had already climbed Europe's highest mountain once before. Dittrich was dreaming of accomplishing the same feat. They started the expedition together on Sept. 4. Because of the worsening weather conditions, they went for a one-shot ascent, climbing up 2,500 meters in one day. They decided to stop at 7 PM, half an hour short of the goal, because of cold weather and fog. We could not determine at the time of going to press whether Dittrich is planning to make another attempt. More in The Outdoor Industry Compass.
