The International Olympic Committee (IOC) wants to recognize National Olympic Committees (NOCs), International Federations (IFs) and Olympians and Paralympians for effective projects to combat climate change and has launched the Climate Action Awards to do just that.

Supported by TOPs (Worldwide Olympic and Paralympic Partners), Airbnb, P&G and Deloitte, the initiative aims to support NOCs, IFs and athletes in their efforts to manage their carbon emissions and understand their impact on the environment.

The awards focus on three action categories: Climate Action x Sustainable Travel (recognizing innovative action and advocating for more sustainable travel in the sports calendar), Climate Action x Athlete Advocacy (honoring civic engagement with a particular focus on climate action to move people and communities to action), and Climate Action x Innovation (recognizing innovation and educational efforts focused on reducing emissions to create a more sustainable future).

Applications can be submitted by NOCs, IFs and Olympic/Paralympic athletes and are open until March 2023. Each award comes with either prize money to be donated to a selected charity or sustainability and leadership course or credits to fund travel expenses. The winning athletes and organizations will be notified and invited to an awards ceremony in 2023. Organizations wishing to apply must commit to joining the UN Sports for Climate Action Framework. To apply or learn more about the awards, athletes should click here, while NOCs and IFs should contact sustainability@olympic.org.
