Citing a little-known Norwegian law, Norwegian citizen and activist Axel Klanderud has called on authorities to force retail companies Anton Sport and Intersport (both part of Sport Holding AS) to be transparent about the microplastic emissions generated by the sale of their products in the country. The following verdict was in his favor: „Sport Holding AS is obliged within 30 days to provide Axel Klanderud with information on how much plastic textiles Anton Sport and Intersport sell in Norway. Sport Holding AS is obliged to provide an overall estimate of the total amount within the same time limit emissions of microplastics from textiles that Anton Sport and Intersport sell based on sales figures of plastic textiles, with estimates of proportions of different types of synthetic polymers.” Furthermore, Klanderud wanted information about actions taken to mitigate microfiber release and any plans to substitute synthetics with more sustainable alternatives. The decision can be seen as a precedent and is likely to be relevant for all retailers in Norway.
