The U.K. Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) has fined Sports Direct and two other firms for spamming consumers with unwanted marketing messages over the internet, according to The Telegraph. The British sporting goods retailer has been fined £70,000 (€81,500-$95,600) for sending 2.3 million e-mails to former customers from December 2019 to February 2020 as part of a “re-engagement campaign.” The ICO ruled that Sports Direct had acted within the law with a first series of e-mails, but found that these were followed by many “frustrating and intrusive” messages sent without the recipients’ consent.
