The national federations that belong to the International Ski Federations (FIS) failed to approve proposals to change the organization’s name to “International Ski and Snowboard Federation” or “International Snowsports Federation.” The vote was taken online at an extraordinary congress held under the leadership of the FIS’ new president, Johan Eliasch. Both proposals polled a majority of the votes, but this was not sufficient to reach the absolute majority of two-thirds required for the name change. The current FIS acronym stands for the organization’s name in French, Fédération International de Ski. It was founded in the French town of Chamonix in 1924. On the other hand, the FIS congress voted in favor of changes in the statutes that set term limits for the president and the FIS Council’s members. There will be a stronger focus on the environment and efforts will be made to better realize the FIS’ commercial potential.
