According to the Observatoire de l’Union Sport & Cycle, sporting goods sales at multi-sport retailers in France suffered a year-on-year decline of 18.7 percent in the first half of 2020, with the worst drop (22%) occurring in footwear and apparel. March and April were the darkest months, with sales down by 54 and 87 percent, respectively. Things picked up in May and June, with gains of 1.7 and 11.5 percent from the same periods of 2019. Some 65 percent of the Observatoire’s members fear that their revenues for the first half of the year will be down by 30 percent. In the cycling segment, however, things appear to be looking up. Cycling shops apparently generated six months’ worth of 2019 revenues in four months alone. E-bike sales have been particularly strong.
