After more than 30 years of ongoing growth, the German fitness industry registered a 24.5 percent decline in turnover to €4.16 billion in 2020 as the Covid-19 pandemic heavily impacted gyms. The figures come from a report titled Eckdaten der deutschen Fitness-Wirtschaft 2021 [Tr.: Key data from the German Fitness Industry 2021] and are based on data collected by the Association of Employers of Fitness and Health Facilities in Germany (DSSV), in collaboration with Deloitte and the German University for Prevention and Health Management (DHFPG). The number of gyms registered in the country dropped by 1.4 percent to 9,538 last year as not all sports facilities were able to overcome the periods of coronavirus-related restrictions, and the rough patch is far from over since gyms also remained closed in the first months of 2021. The number of subscribers to German fitness clubs dropped from 11.66 million people in 2019 to 10.31 million at the end of 2020.
