Matthias Bärtels, who had been serving as one of the two managing directors for the Intersport Voswinkel chain in Germany since 2012, has died at the age of 53. Responsible for purchasing, sales, marketing and merchandising, he led a refitting program at Voswinkel and introduced a CRM system. Soon after working as a salesman for Kaufring, he joined the staff of a Karstadt Sports store in Munich. He then spent many years at Sport Scheck and was in charge of all its bricks-and-mortar stores between 2001 and 2005. He became joint managing director of Intersport Voswinkel after working in another sector for Palmer Textil. Until further notice, the chain is going to be run by the other joint managing director, Anna-Lena Schulte-Angels, who took the place of Jochen Schnell in March 2015.
