John and Patrick McEnroe, the legendary American brothers who have both retired from professional tennis, will be playing the first official tennis match to take place in Antarctica. The events company LegendsAbroad.com and the sports and entertainment agency Octagon are organizing a trip there for the occasion for an “intimate group of tennis aficionados,” who will be traveling with the McEnroes and perhaps even playing against them, for fun. The trip is scheduled to run from Feb. 22 to March 5 of next year. A chartered flight will take them from Orlando, Florida, to Ushuaia, Argentina, where they will board a ship called The World Navigator and steam – with hybrid, electric-hydro propulsion – to the polar continent, stopping at the South Shetland Islands. There will also be workshops on marine wildlife, glaciology, ecology, climate change, astronomy, photography and the history of Antarctica.
