Mike Ashley, chief executive and majority shareholder of Sports Direct International, reportedly managed to get all resolutions passed at the company's annual general meeting last week, where the media were banned from attending. He refused to accept an independent review of corporate governance as all the major auditing firms have refused to take the place of the outgoing auditor, Grant Thornton. Ashley insisted that Sports Direct was pursuing an “elevation” strategy, intended to turn it into the “Selfridges of sport,” under the direction of Michael Murray, who is set to become his son-in-law.
