Mike Ashley, the majority shareholder of Sports Direct International (SDI), the leading British and increasingly European sports retailer, is reportedly preparing the launch of a new chain of discount stores. The Mail on Sunday reported that a Mega Value store opened in Kidderminster, Worcestershire, on the location of a department store that was shut down last year. The store apparently offers a mixture of household goods and small appliances at discount prices – unrelated to the sports and fashion items offered in stores owned by SDI. The plan is apparently dubbed Son of Woolworths and it comes at a time when there are empty stores on British shopping streets.
