Nike has introduced Aerogami, a new performance apparel technology that improves breathability for athletes. Think of it as a ventilation system that self-adjusts to one’s needs, creating a more breathable functional garment with on-demand ventilation. Nike describes it as a “product that interacts with your body in real-time as you warm up, sweat and cool down.” Here’s how it works: Tiny winged vents open when sweat builds up on the skin, allowing air to flow better and sweat to escape. When the body cools and the sweat dries, the vents close back up. This ability is achieved by a moisture-reactive film placed on the vents that contracts and expands on its own when it senses sweat on the body.

“We know feeling too warm, uncomfortable and distracted while wearing a running jacket is a common challenge many runners face, so we’ve obsessed developing an innovative solution that gives them increased breathability without compromising style and protection,“ commented Jahan Behbahany, Senior Apparel Innovation Product Manager in Nike’s Advanced Innovation Collective. “What’s great about this technology is not only can the athlete feel the benefit, but they can also see it.”
The technology debuts in the Nike Run Division Aerogami Jacket. It features the ventilation on the chest and back, two of the areas where runners sweat and heat up the most, allowing airflow to pass through the jacket as the runner moves. The jacket also features the Storm-FIT ADV fabric, which protects the runner from wind and rain.
Based on testing in the Nike Sport Research Lab’s climate chambers and data visualization of runners’ heat and sweat maps, the placement of vents varies between the men’s and women’s jackets to meet gender-specific needs, such as vents on the women’s jacket in the sports bra area.
The women’s Nike Run Division Aerogami Jacket releases in July 2023 on nike.com and at select retailers. The men’s jacket will be released later this fall.
