Non-performance sneakers, also known as “athleisure” footwear, is now driving growth in the sports leisure category in the U.S., according to NPD's Footwear Insights report for the second quarter of the year. Leisure sneakers - which include sport lifestyle and boots — saw sales increase by 7 percent to $2.9 billion. Meanwhile, sales of performance sneakers - which include running, basketball, baseball, soccer, football, tennis and training— were down by 5 percent to $1.7 billion during the quarter. NPD analysts said that the trend in favor of non-performance sneakers is likely to continue in the near future. NPD's quarterly reports are based on information collected from athletic specialty/sporting goods, premium, mid-tier, shoe chain and other channels.
