Nordica USA will pay $214,000 as a penalty to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission for not reporting known problems with the binding plates on its XBi ALU skis. In autumn 2008, the company had about 200 warranty claims from customers whose binding plates had cracked and broken, which could cause skiers to lose control or fall, risking injury. The CPSC said that Nordica USA knew about the defective part but didn't report it; 4,500 pairs of the skis were finally recalled in February 2009. Neither Nordica nor the CPSC have received reports of any injuries.
