Pangaia has released a limited-edition sweatshirt, made in partnership with Japanese biomaterials manufacturing group Spiber, featuring biotech Brewed Protein fibers and organic cotton. Spiber’s Brewed Protein materials are made from plant-derived biomass using a proprietary fermentation process. Brewed Protein polymers can be transformed into various forms, from delicate filament fibers with a silky sheen to spun yarns with cashmere-like softness or the thermal properties of wool. Unlike many existing synthetic materials, the large-scale production of these fibers is expected to allow for significantly lower greenhouse gas emissions. Their production process is said to require less land and water use than traditional animal-derived fibers. The new limited-edition collection is the fourth capsule within Pangaia Lab, the “discovery platform” that aims to bring advanced technology to lifestyle goods. The collection also marks the beginning of a longer multi-year agreement between Pangaia and Spiber that will see the integration of the Brewed Protein fibers into more new products.
