Peloton Interactive has followed through on its agreement with the CPSC to improve the safety of its treadmills by requiring users to unock the devices with a four-digit PIN, dubbed “Tread Lock,” after 45 seconds of inactivity. The feature is part of an automatic software upgrade that is being pushed out to all Tread+ treadmills. Lower-priced Tread models, which have been only sold outside the U.S., will get the update next month. Most owners are expected to keep their treadmills, despite the company’s offer to take them back for a full refund through the recall it announced earlier in May. The company has ceased taking new orders and cancelled pending orders while it works on a hardware modification to reduce the chances that children, pets or objects get pulled under the rear of the machine.
