Planet Sports, the leading Indian sporting goods retail chain, has seen most of its managers depart after its move last week from Gurgaon, near Delhi, to Mumbai. Only four of the 74 employees at the Gurgaon office were transferred. The move was ordered by the Future Group, the huge Mumbai-based retail group that fully acquired Planet Sports in 2007. The company could not be reached for comment this week, but it apparently intends to run Planet Sports with a much-reduced management team, headed by a present manager of the group, in the framework of a centralization of operations that will help cut costs. With 75 Planet Sports stores around the country, the company is by far the largest integrated sports retailer in India, and it has introduced slick multi-brand formats into the country. Ravdeep Singh, the chief executive who has led Planet Sports' expansion in the last years, is leaving the company. He wishes to continue to use his expertise in sports retailing in Asia or the Middle East.
