Nike is introducing “a game-changing innovation platform revolutionizing apparel creation,” dubbed Nike Forward. The process of creating Nike Forward, which Nike says required over five years of research and development, needs fewer steps than traditional Nike knits and woven processes.
Rather than follow a multistage creation cycle – spin yarn, knit, cut, sew and more – Nike Forward turns fiber directly to textile through needle-punch, the company has explained. Fewer steps allow for a 75 percent reduction on average in the carbon footprint compared to traditional knit fleece. The Nike Forward material also has a lighter density than traditional knit fleece, which is key to reaching 75 percent carbon reduction. The finished product is comprised of 70 percent recycled content by weight. Nike Forward can be made with a diverse range of layers, including industrial and post-consumer waste, and can be tuned for the athlete’s needs.
Nike Forward debuts in Hoodie and Crew styles. In keeping with its sustainable philosophy, the first iteration of Nike Forward products is made without zippers, aglets or extra trims, making it easier for the garments to be recycled. Nike Forward releases globally on Sep. 15.
