YKK has announced the AiryString, its first major zipper redesign in a century. The tapeless innovation promises lighter, more flexible closures and supports sustainability goals, making it a game-changer for performance and outdoor apparel.

The humble zipper is getting its first major upgrade in a century. YKK, the world’s largest zipper manufacturer, has introduced AiryString, a tapeless design that eliminates the traditional fabric tape and attaches teeth directly to the garment. This makes the zipper lighter, sleeker, and more flexible—ideal for technical apparel and outdoor gear.

Revolutionary design and performance benefits

Christine Chen, YKK’s New York marketing manager, told NBC News: “We’re stripping away the tape so it only has the teeth. It’s quite revolutionary.” She added that the new zipper “feels very flexible compared to the traditional one” and operates more smoothly, reducing snagging issues. The design also cuts bulk and weight, which matters for performance gear. However, AiryString requires specialised sewing machines, making it roughly four times more expensive than standard zippers—a cost YKK hopes will drop as demand grows.

Early adoption by outdoor brands

Outdoor brands are already on board. The North Face is using AiryString in mountaineering gear, calling it a “game changer” for reducing pack weight. “A gram here, a gram there—or in this case, several grams—goes a long way,” said Kyle Parker of The North Face in the NBC segment.

Sustainability at the core

Beyond performance, sustainability is central. AiryString includes versions made from 100% recycled materials. YKK also offers Natulon zippers from post-consumer recycled polyester, GreenRise plant-based zippers, and waterless Eco-Dye technology to cut water and chemical use. Waterproof options like AquaGuard and Aqualock remain staples for outdoor gear. With AiryString, YKK reinvents a century-old component and sets a new benchmark for innovation in sportswear and outdoor apparel.
