Rens Original, the Finnish start-up that claims to have developed the world’s first sneakers made from coffee waste, is looking to raise $1 million to fund the manufacture of its new Nomad shoe, presented as “the world’s first crowdfunded climate neutral sneaker.” Rens Original made its debut in the summer of 2019 with the Originals sneaker, made from 21 cups of coffee waste and six bottles of recycled plastic. Funded via Kickstarter, the brand created the world’s first waterproof “coffee sneaker” and raised more than half a million U.S. dollars, becoming the all-time most funded Kickstarter campaign in Finland. This time, Rens aims to surpass its previous record by raising $1 million to manufacture and distribute the Nomad, a sneaker designed from its customers’ feedback for all performance activities. The Nomad is designed to support a wide range of sporting activities such as hiking, walking or trail running under any weather conditions, the company claims. The shoe is made from waste-based and low-impact materials and features a fully-recycled waterproof layer and a self-developed ventilation system. Rens will work with Climate Partner to reduce and offset all the climate emissions at each stage of the process. Backers of the Kickstarter campaign will be able to get their Nomad sneakers in nine colorways at an early bird-price starting at $89 for the first eight hours, before moving to an early-bird price of $109.
