El Corte Inglés will be closing down its Sportown banner, which is devoted to sportswear, on Feb. 29, according to CMDsport. The reason is the failure to meet sales targets.
The first Sportown stores, covering some 350 sqm apiece, opened in 2009 in major Spanish cities. There are, at present, six stores: Albacete, Alcalá de Henares, Jerez, Málaga, Ourense and Palencia. At its peak, Sportown was running 20 doors. The survivors stopped receiving new stock in October or November of last year.
El Corte Inglés has of late seen sales decline and margins shrink at its department stores as well as at Sfera, its womenswear chain.
