According to CMDsport, JD Sports has managed to open three new stores on the Iberian Peninsula – in or around Malaga, Ceuta and Oporto – amid all the re-openings of the post-pandemic. The highlight of the British retail chain’s new stores was the one that opened on June 13 in the city of Ceuta, on the slip of Spanish land that abuts Morocco and is otherwise surrounded by the Mediterranean. There are plans to open a further seven Iberian stores before the year is out. Refurbishments are already under way at three sites – all in Spain, with two in the Canary Islands – and they should be open in July. The other four will probably also be in Spain. According to CMDsport, JD’s objective is to add 11 stores on the Iberian Peninsula by the end of the year, building up to a total of 71 in Spain and 23 in Portugal, and then to raise the Iberial fleet from 94 to 100 units next year. Overall, 2020 will have amounted to a mild slowdown from the pace of the three previous years. JD opened 16 stores in 2017 and 2018, and 15 in 2019 on the peninsula.
