Seven out of 10 sports shops located in French mountain resorts booked a drop in sales during the winter season, according to a survey carried out by FPS with 140 points of sale representing about 15 percent of the market. The decline in revenues is estimated at 6 percent, led by a 7 percent drop in apparel, equipment and accessories sales. Equipment rentals slipped by 5 percent. According to sport-guide.com, 16 percent of retailers suffered a sharp fall in revenues and 54 percent experienced a decline. Only 10 percent saw a rise in turnover. FPS said that 69 percent of retailers are concerned about their future and 31 percent confident or optimistic. Separately, the revenues of ski lift operators are estimated to have dropped by 3 percent during the winter season, while the occupancy rate in the resorts stood at 60 percent, in line with the previous year.
