Shock Doctor Sports, best known for its mouth guards, has been acquired by Bregal Partners, a middle-market New York-based private equity firm, for an undisclosed amount. Shock Doctor had been owned since 2008 by Norwest Equity Partners, an investment firm based in Minneapolis. Bregal's portfolio of investments focuses on consumer and health care businesses and Shock Doctor was seen as uniquely positioned for rapid growth at the intersection of these two industries. Shock Doctor has been growing at a rate of 20 to 30 percent per year, with revenues expected to hit $100 million within a couple of years. The company, with headquarters in Minnetonka, Minnesota, makes a comprehensive line of protective and performance products for hockey, football, baseball, basketball, soccer, martial arts and boxing, and lacrosse, among other sports. Current product categories include core protective, performance sports therapy, sports gloves under the Cutters brand, and insoles.
