Sports Direct International (SDI) has reportedly been outbid in its attempt to secure assets of BHS, a British chain offering clothing and household items that went into administration (a form of receivership) around the end of April. The Financial Times reports that the SDI proposition was lower than bids put in by the owners of Matalan, a discount clothing chain, and Edinburgh Woollen Mill. Greg Tufnell, a former managing director of Mothercare, was reported to be leading another bid for BHS. The administrators are apparently hoping to sell the entire company, which employs about 11,000 people and runs 164 stores. SDI previously failed to secure the purchase of House of Fraser but it still has an interest in Debenhams, another British department store chain.
