Sports Direct International (SDI), the leading U.K. sports retailer, has come under scrutiny in a documentary by Channel 4 Dispatches. “The Secrets of Sports Direct” alleged that some of the discounts carried by the retailer may be misleading, because the company was inflating the original price of the products on discount tags in order to show a bigger price reduction, and it was sometimes incorrectly using “Closing Down Sale” signs. Using undercover footage and recordings, the documentary went on to depict tough working conditions at SDI's logistics center in Shirebrook. SDI issued a response saying that it did not aim to mislead any of its customers, only to offer exceptional value for money, and that it provides working conditions in compliance with applicable employment legislation. Employment practices at SDI have come in for criticism in the recent years due to the wide-spread use of zero-hour contracts, while a parliamentary committee hearing in April revealed some unusual business practices, as previously reported.
