Sports Direct is entering the Swiss market, opening a store in Bern this month. Located at 27 Zeughausgasse, it will spread over three floors. Swiss observers have expressed strong concern about the move, noting that Sports Direct is taking the place of the former flagship store of Universal Sport, a chain of sporting goods stores affiliated with Intersport that had to close down due to financial problems. At least two other local sporting goods retailers, Haueter Sport and Vaucher Sport, have shut down since last year.
