SRAM, the manufacturer of bicycle components, is moving most of its production of internal gear hubs from its facility in Schweinfurt, Germany, to Asia, closer to the numerous bicycles factories there. Created after its acquisition of Fichtel & Sachs in 1997, the Schweinfurt location will not close, however. Instead it will be turned into a center for product development and design, and a service center for road, mountain and trekking bikes as well as suspension systems. SRAM plans to invest more in production and R&D for internal hubs, as well as in technologies and manpower to ramp up its work in product development, dealer service and logistics. The company said that since more and more customers have moved their bicycle production to Asia in recent years, it makes more sense for SRAM to follow to be closer to them to provide better service. A final date for the transition has not been set.
