Stephanie L. Kwolek, the DuPont chemist who invented Kevlar, died after a brief illness on June 18. She was 90. Initially, she wanted to be a fashion designer. The light, sturdy and flexible material that she developed from a liquid crystalline solution in 1965, when she was 42, is now used in about 200 different applications including racquets and skis.
