The Brazilian government has until July 4 to decide on a complaint that Brazilian importers of athletic shoes and other types of footwear have been circumventing the anti-dumping duties imposed in March 2010. Many have shifted sourcing from China to Vietnam and Indonesia, but based on a preliminary investigation, it seems unlikely that the anti-dumping duties will be extended to these or any other countries. On the other hand, Brazilian shoe industry officials feel that protective measures will be extended to shoe components sourced from China as the investigation showed that some companies have been importing the uppers, soles and other elements of some shoes from China for assembly in Brazil in order to avoid the punitive duties.
