The consumption of new bicycles declined by 5 percent in terms of units in Europe last year, according to Conebi, the European bicycle industry federation. They went down to 19.6 million units from 20.6 million units in 2015, falling by 6.9 percent in Germany, 13.7 percent in the U.K. and 5.7 percent in the Netherlands. They grew by just over one percent in France, Italy and Spain. However, the average selling price increased to €389 in Europe in 2016 from €346.04 in the previous year, thanks to the growing popularity of electric bikes. Their sales rose by 22.1 percent in volume to a total of 1,364,000 units, led by Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium.
