The European Commission is gradually increasing funding of sports-related projects through its Erasmus+ program, which started in 2014. It has set aside a budget of around €50 million to fund about 200 projects in 2018, building up gradually to 300 projects for €70 million in 2020. That would compare with €34.1 million spent in 2016, when it financed 63 collaborative partnership projects in the areas of social inclusion and the integrity of sport, as well as 18 not-for-profit European sport events.
