The European Commission is reacting to the duties imposed by the U.S. on imports of steel and aluminum by proposing to impose duties of up to 50 percent from July 1st on a variety of items including some types of textile products and sports shoes. The items carry an annual import value of up to $2.8 billion. The member states of the European Union still have to decide which specific items should be taxed. Details could not be obtained by the time of going to press, but it just looks like this is more like a tactical move intended to strike a compromise with the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump, which is waging a similar battle with China.
