The European Outdoor Group (EOG) reported at the OutDoor fair that the European outdoor market increased by 3.1 percent to an estimated level of €4,776 million at the wholesale level last year, based on its annual market research study. Extrapolating mark-ups, the EOG has calculated that the market was worth more than €10 billion at the retail level, excluding sales taxes. The NPD Group estimates that the consumption of outdoor products was flat in Europe in 2013, amounting to €16.3 billion including sales taxes. The difference is apparently due to the methodology and to the much wider definition given by NPD to the outdoor market. The 21st edition of the OutDoor show in Friedrichshafen went relatively well. The overall atmosphere was upbeat, the business climate was generally positive and the total number of daily visits went up by 2.1 percent to 21,912 as+ compared to last year, in spite of the uncertain economic climate and the unpredictable weather situation. Full details, including plenty of numbers on the Chinese outdoor market, are in the Outdoor Industry Compass.
