The European sporting goods industry federation, Fesi, said it welcomed a vote in the European Parliament for the adoption of a new legislation in the European Union that will strengthen the possibility for customs authorities in all the member countries to act against counterfeit goods. Fesi noted that the number of counterfeit items seized dropped dramatically in recent years because of outdated EU trademark law that prevented customs from seizing lots that were declared in transit through the EU. Furthermore, counterfeits are increasingly imported as small packages in response to orders placed over the internet.
