The exhibitors of Performance Days, the trade show on functional fabrics taking place in Munich on April 20-21, have sponsored a new design project by the Master School of Fashion in Munich combining fashion and function in sportswear. Under the heading “a fior da pele,” which is the Brazilian for “butterflies in the belly,” a total of 30 teams of 2-3 students at the design school were asked to create a couture fashion garment and a matching sporty outfit from functional fabrics, with a view to the coming Olympic Games in Rio. The assigned sports included sailing, dancing, and riding. Each team was required to use the same fabric for the dressy and sporty interpretation of the theme. A wide range of technical textiles were used, from waterproof laminates and softshells to lightweight baselayers and compression fabrics, all provided for free by the exhibitors.
