The French bike market keeps growing. It posted higher sales for the third consecutive year, driven by the double-digit growth of e-bikes. According to the French bicycle observatory, sales increased to 3,034,000 bikes sold in 2016. Sales passed the three million units for the first time since 2012. As for e-bikes, sales increased by 31.4 percent to 134,000 units last year as compared to 2015, with an average retail price of around €1,000. The French national government offers a subsidy of up to €200 for purchasing an e-bike. Urban and trekking e-bikes were the most popular, with 106,000 units sold. Meanwhile, e-MTB is also a growing market in France, with 15,300 units sold in 2016, which mark a 72 percent increase from 2015. Experts foresee a further increase in e-MTB sales for this year.
