The government of Myanmar has approved the first minimum wage for all the workers in the country, which is becoming a new sourcing hub for clothing and footwear, except for businesses that employ fewer than 15 people. After bitter negotiations, the minimum wage has been set at 3,600 kyat ($2.86) per day. Labor leaders had asked for MMK 4,000 per day. Many Myanmar citizens work in neighboring Thailand, where the minimum daily wage is 300 baht ($8.38). The labor negotiations were reportedly instigated by H&M, which uses 13 contract factories in Myanmar. With their six-day work week, the manufacturers in Myanmar will have to pay a minimum monthly wage of around $67, compared with minimums of between $90 and $128 in Cambodia and Vietnam.
