The Hohenstein Institute is working on a two-year research project on textile-based head protection systems to help helmet manufacturers offer improved headgear. By measuring heads, helmets and the textiles inside them, the study is due to produce a comprehensive database for optimized textile-based head protection devices, applicable to all head protection systems, including those for cyclists, skaters, riders and water sports participants. The institute claims that the current standards do not include the required measurement information for deriving 3D shapes. The project will research head shape requirements, depending on the various body and head morphologies, as well as facial measurements, to provide dimensional correlations between the eye, nose, mouth and ears. This will provide manufacturers with specific sizing systems and standardized, virtual average 3D head shapes. The project is due to conclude in the summer of 2014.
