The International Olympic Committee (IOC) approved on Aug. 3 five new sports for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. The 2020 Games will include skateboarding, surfing, karate, climbing and baseball/softball. These will not replace any of the 28 sports already on the schedule, and the athlete and event quotas of the existing Olympic sports will be unaffected by the new sports. The Tokyo 2020 Organising Committee submitted its proposal for the five new sports to the IOC in September 2015. The inclusion of the new sports will add 18 events and around 474 athletes. Discussions on the event program for Tokyo 2020 are ongoing, and will be finalized by the IOC Executive Board in mid-2017.
