The latest Mach Consumer study, which analyses trends in the Swiss sports market every two years, indicates that 10.6 percent of the Swiss population purchased sporting goods online or through a mail order catalog in the last 12 months, up from 7.1 percent in 2005. The study also showed decreases in the percentage of the population that practiced most kinds of sports, again as compared to 2005. Cycling, jogging, ski touring, yoga and tai-chi were among the exceptions. There has been a slight increase in hiking/trekking since 2009. Snow sports in general still attract 2.7 million, compared with 3.1 million involved in outdoor sports, but only 33.3 percent of the population practices alpine skiing, down from 36.8 percent in 2005. As for other snow sports, 8.8 percent practice snowboarding, 7.4 percent Nordic skiing and 5.2 snow mountaineering.
