The members of the Intersport and Sport 2000 buying groups suffered sales declines in the first six months of this year, due primarily to unfavorable weather conditions and a comparison with a World Cup year. Besides team sports, the snow sports and outdoor categories scored declines of 32 and 3 percent, respectively. Total retail sales at Sport 2000 fell by 0.9 percent during the period, including a drop of 1.1 percent for outdoor products. Alpine ski equipment fell by 23.6 percent, but running and beachwear showed increases of 12.8 and 16.1 percent, respectively (more in The Outdoor Industry Compass).
