The New Balance Foundation has pledged $2.55 million toward a new initiative focused on the promotion of physical activity for children, in collaboration with the 100 Mile Club and ChildObesity180 at Tufts University. At the core of the collaboration is the New Balance Foundation Billion Mile Race, a nationwide campaign in the U.S. that invites students to collectively reach 1 billion miles through participation in school-based jogging, walking, and running clubs. Since 1980, obesity in the U.S. have doubled in 2-to 5-year-olds, quadrupled in 6-to 11-year-olds, and tripled in 12-to 19-year-olds. Only 42 percent of the children in the U.S. aged 6 to 11 engage in the recommended 60 minutes of physical activity per day.
