The organizing committee for the 2020 Summer Olympic Games in Tokyo has recommended the addition of four new sports to its programs: baseball/softball, surfing, skateboarding, karate and sports climbing. Applications made by the representatives of three other sports - bowling, squash and wushu - were not accepted. Baseball and softball, which are very popular in Japan, had been taken out of the Olympic agenda when the Games took place in Beijing in 2008. The committee's recommendations will be submitted to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for its decision in Rio de Janeiro in August 2016.
