The proportion of French people practicing at least one physical or sports activities has risen to 87 percent of the total population from 84 percent ten years ago, according to a major survey conducted by the French sporting goods retailers' federation, FPS, through Ipsos. Among the various sports activities, running, football and fitness are on the rise, while alpine skiing and tennis have come down. Cycling remains the most widely spread sport, followed by swimming. The majority of the French people say that they practice sport for their personal wellbeing or to relax. The entertaining aspects come in second place, followed by the desire to keep fit, the contact with nature and socializing with friends or the family. The same study, which was conducted last June among 5,000 people, indicates that 91 percent of them bought sporting goods in sporting goods stores, while 42 percent bought them in supermarkets or hypermarkets, 39 percent on pure online stores and 21 percent in single-brand shops. The highlights of the study, which can be purchased from FPS, were published in the premier issue of a glossier version of magazine of the association, Filière Sport.
