The recreation/leisure segment at Dorel Industries saw a 18.8 percent increase in sales to $172.5 million for the third quarter ended Sept. 30. Excluding new acquisitions and foreign currency rates, revenues were up by 13 percent. The unit, which includes the Cycling Sports Group that is over Cannondale, Schwinn and other brands, had its operating income nearly double, up by 96 percent to $9.5 million. Sales were up both in Europe and in North America, and reached across mass merchants as well as independent bike dealers, helped by increased promotional activity and new models coming out. Cannondale has introduced several new bicycle models, including its E-Series electric bike and the Super X lightweight mountain bike. The Cycling Sports Group has increased its ties to Liquigas Sports, co-sponsorship its professional cycling team.
