The Royal St George's golf club, an Open Championship venue in Kent, has voted to allow women members for the first time. The resolution in favor of this change was adopted at an extraordinary general meeting last month, with immediate effect. More than 81 percent of the full members took part in the ballot and 90 percent voted in favor, while a majority of 75 percent was required. Royal St George's had been one of three British clubs on the Open rota with male-only membership, the two others being Muirfield and Royal Troon. Both are reviewing their policies, under renewed pressure after the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews put an end to its 260-year-old male-only membership rule in September. Royal Troon regards itself as a special case due to the fact that it shares facilities with a ladies' club.
