The Swiss sporting goods market suffered an estimated decline of 2 percent at retail during the first six months of 2018, according to joint research conducted by GfK and Asmas, the Swiss sporting goods retailers' association, with online sales growing at a double-digit rate. Poor weather conditions at the beginning of the year led to decreases of 4 percent in sports equipment and 3 percent in clothing, despite the positive effect of the Fifa World Cup on sales of football jerseys. Footwear sales went up thanks to the growing popularity of running.
