The World Federation of the Sporting Goods Industry (WFSGI) has become a supporter of World Bicycle Relief (WBR), an organization that supports environmentally-friendly mobility by distributing specially designed bicycles through philanthropic and social enterprise programs. Established in 2005, WBR has delivered over 375,000 bicycles so far and trained over 1,800 field mechanics in Africa, Southeast Asia and South America. Among many other benefits, bicycles distributed by WBR enable students to attend class more regularly, and they help healthcare workers to provide more consistent care. It has also created economic opportunities by training bike mechanics and employing bike assemblers to support local programs. WBR has assembly facilities in Kenya, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Malawi and Angola. Dave Neiswander, president of WBR, said in a statement that the WFSGI would provide the organization with a strong network to scale up its programs.
