Total sales of sporting goods increased in Norway by 5 percent in the first nine months of 2014, according to the local industry association, Sportsbransjen, which is predicting a record year for the sector. Year-on-year, sales declined slightly in the first quarter, but they were relatively good in the second quarter and went up by 10 percent in the third. According to Bård Kristiansen, chief executive of Sportsbransjen, the most recent spurt was due in part to strong demand for electric bicycles, which is outstripping the available supply. Higher sales are being reported for running shoes and apparel, with Norwegians taking great interest in organized races. Outdoor and home fitness are two other stand-out areas.
